Hahndorf's Main Street is packed with galleries, independent shops, and places that sell things you won't find anywhere else. Whether you're after local art, German food, or something quirky to take home, you'll find yourself browsing longer than you planned.
The many galleries and shops to visit in beautiful Hahndorf
Hahndorf Academy

The Academy is Hahndorf's flagship art space, housed in a historic building on Main Street. It runs regular exhibitions of contemporary and local work, so what's on changes throughout the year. Even if you're not planning to buy, it's worth stepping inside to see what's showing.
The German Village Shop

If you want to bring a piece of Hahndorf home with you, this is the place to go. It stocks imported German goods, local preserves, baked items, and things you'd expect to find in an actual German village. The range of schnapps and liqueurs is good if you're looking for something beyond wine. Hahndorf has a rich German heritage and there's plenty of attractions to immerse yourself in it.
Gathered
Part gallery, part homewares, part gift shop. Gathered has an eye for Australian-made pieces and objects with a bit of story behind them. The kind of place where you go in for one thing and leave with three.
Smaller boutique galleries and shops to explore

Once you've covered the main strip, there's plenty more scattered along Main Street. Sanctuary Gallery, Mark Lobert Gallery, and Tineriba Gallery if you're serious about art. Grass Roots Vintage for secondhand finds. The Alpaca Shop and Hahndorf Kangaroo and Sheepskin Products if you want something distinctly Australian. Outback Opals and the Opal and Gemstone Studio for jewellery. The Fudge Shop, Fruchoc, and Humbugs of Hahndorf for sweets. The Little Bag Shop and Hahndorf Leathersmith if you're after something to wear. And we would be remiss to mention the shopping you can do at Hahndorf's local cellar doors and wineries, most just a short drive away.
Practical tips for shopping in Hahndorf
- Main Street can get busy on weekends and public holidays, especially mid-morning and early afternoon. If you prefer browsing without the crowds, aim for a weekday or arrive early.
- Most shops are independent, so trading hours vary. Some stores don't open until 10-11am so be sure to check opening hours if there are any particular galleries or stores you want to visit.
- Parking is mostly free and easy to find. There's plenty of street parking along Main Street (some areas have 3 hour limits) and a car park near the Academy.
- You can combine shopping with a coffee or lunch. There are cafes and pubs scattered through town, check out our things to do page for some top spots for meal.
- If you're visiting for both wine and shopping, a morning browsing Main Street pairs well with lunch and a winery visit in the afternoon.
