The Adelaide Hills is one of South Australia's favourite cool-climate wine regions, and Hahndorf sits right in the middle. If wine is even a small part of your trip, you're already in the perfect spot.
The best wineries near Hahndorf
You don't need to plan a big day of tastings to make it worthwhile. One or two cellar doors and a long lunch is plenty, and here's where we'd start.
Hahndorf Hill Winery
One of the closest cellar doors to town, and a lovely one to start with. Hahndorf Hill is known for its Austrian grape varieties, including gruner veltliner and zweigelt, alongside the Adelaide Hills classics. The views over the vines toward the hills are pretty hard to beat too.
The Lane Vineyard
A short drive from Hahndorf, The Lane pairs a cellar door with a restaurant looking out over the valley. If you'd rather turn your tasting into a proper, sit-down lunch, this is the one.
Sidewood Cellar Door & Restaurant
Sidewood makes wine, cider and spirits, so there's something for everyone, even if not everyone in your group is a wine person. The cellar door has a restaurant attached, which makes it an easy stop for mixed groups.
Smaller boutique wineries near Hahndorf to add to your list
While many visitors head straight for the larger cellar doors, locals often prefer exploring the smaller boutique wineries scattered between Hahndorf, Lenswood and Balhannah, like Anderson Hill, Shaw + Smith, Mt Lofty Ranges Vineyard and Sinclar’s Gully.
You'll usually find a more personal tasting experience, often hosted by the owners themselves, and discover wines you won't see in most bottle shops.
Planning your visit
- These cellar doors are spread out along the roads around Hahndorf rather than clustered together, so you'll need transport between them.
- If you're driving, sort a designated driver, or look into local tour operators who run small-group winery tours from Hahndorf.
- Weekends and long weekends get busy, especially at venues with restaurants, so book ahead if you're after lunch.
- If you’re planning to only stop for a day, we recommend not rushing back to Adelaide after dinner. Hahndorf takes on a completely different feel once the day visitors leave. The village becomes quieter, the shopfronts glow under heritage lighting and the pubs and wine bars take on a relaxed local vibe. Staying overnight lets you experience a side of Hahndorf most visitors never see. Stay close to it all
Hahndorf on Main is opening right in the heart of the village later in 2026, just a short stroll from Main Street's bakeries and pubs, and a quick 10 to 15 minute drive from these cellar doors. We can't wait to welcome you - bookings are now open!
